Cette série capture quelque chose de profondément américain : notre fascination pour la route ouverte.
Venant de Paris, je ne comprenais pas vraiment l’attrait des Américains pour partir sans destination précise. L’idée de monter dans une voiture et de rouler sans but me semblait étrangère, presque absurde. Dans un pays où chaque mètre carré est habité ou façonné depuis des millénaires, il n’y a pas de véritable “grands espaces”. On n’est jamais loin de rien.
Mais en traversant l’Atlantique, j’ai découvert un territoire de routes infinies et d’horizons sans fin. Vivre aux États-Unis m’a permis de comprendre que le besoin de partir, de s’évader, est inscrit dans l’identité américaine.
Ce sentiment traverse les siècles — des tribus nomades aux pionniers qui ont traversé le continent à la recherche d’une vie meilleure. “Go West, young man” est devenu un mantra. Sur la route de Kerouac, un manifeste.
Je comprends désormais l’appel magnétique de la route. La liberté et l’aventure nous manquent trop souvent, sauf quand on est sur la route. Il y a quelque chose d’enivrant à laisser le voyage devenir la destination.
Ces photographies sont une invitation au départ. Elles nous incitent à quitter le quotidien et à suivre les possibilités infinies qui s’ouvrent sur la route.

This series captures something quintessentially American: our love affair with the open road.
Growing up in Paris, France, I couldn’t quite grasp the allure of setting out on a journey with no destination in mind. The idea of hopping into a car and driving seemingly aimlessly seemed foreign, almost wasteful. In a small country where every inch has been inhabited and molded by humans for millennia, there’s no true big open space. You’re never far from anything.
But then, I crossed the Atlantic and found myself in the land of endless highways and boundless horizons. Living in the US, I came to realize that the impulse to roam is woven into the very fabric of American identity.
It’s a sentiment that echoes through the ages, from the nomadic tribes who first covered this vast land to the pioneers who carved their path westward, chasing dreams of a better life. “Go West, young man” is a mantra. “On the road” by Kerouac, a manifesto.
I now understand the pull of the magnetic pull of the open road. Freedom and adventure are too often sorely missing from our lives, but not when you are on the road. There’s something intoxicating about letting the journey itself be the destination.
These photographs serve as a siren call to the wanderer within us. They invite us to leave behind everyday life and follow the endless possibilities that await on the open road.

Tony Harmer est un photographe commercial et éditorial publié à l’international. Né à Londres, il s’est installé jeune à New York, où sa passion pour la photographie est devenue une carrière.
Après avoir été photographe en chef et directeur photo pour Antenna et 0-60 Magazine, il s’est tourné vers des clients haut de gamme tels que Porsche, Audi, Toyota, Mazda, Rivian, Subaru, Hyundai, Infiniti et Ford.
Aujourd’hui basé à Los Angeles avec sa femme et leurs deux bouledogues français, il explore la lumière à travers la photographie automobile, le paysage, le lifestyle et la nature morte.
En dehors de son travail, Tony Harmer voyage, suit les courses de Formule 1 et s’engage activement pour la sensibilisation à la santé mentale.
