STEVEN LOPEZ: Geishas, Japan (gum print)
$1,000.00 – $1,500.00
Steven Lopez photographed these traditional geishas with infrared film, which brings a distinctive look to the image. Gum bichromate printing is a 19th-century technique that few people still use today due to its complexity. Requiring multiple soaks in different chemicals (some of them dangerous), the elaborate and lengthy process results in painterly images, like this one.

Technical Specs: Photographed on a Nikon 7 using an infrared film. Hand-printed by the artist on matte textured paper (both inks and papers are archival). Cut to selected size with rough edges around the image to add to the tactile quality of the print. Gum printing is a labor and time-intensive process in which a negative is exposed to various chemicals over a series of manipulations. The end result looks very layered and painterly.
